Last year my year six son jumped in with gusto and read The Sea Around Us with ease. This years year 6 asked if we could do it together … and in doing so, I have realized I missed a huge opportunity with my first son to look up some videos of things mentioned in the book.

As I did with The Book of Marvels part 1 I am going to update this post weekly with videos covering the weeks readings. So bookmark this page and check back!

Each of these videos shared here are ones I have enjoyed with my son and feel are valuable additions to the concepts taught in the book, but please use your own discernment for letting your child watch these online.

These videos are following Ambleside Online year 6 schedule of The Sea Around Us by Rachel Carson and covers a full 36 week school year.
Please check the AO note on this book (linked here) for their notes on this book.
I have opted to skip videos for chapter 1 (week 1 and 2) but we did read and discuss the chapter.

One of the coolest things we have discovered is this website at Neal.Fun where you can scroll downwards through the ocean. Click the image or click here to check it out, and you may want to utilize it throughout reading The Sea Around Us.

Week 3 The Surface of the Sea chapter 2 – first half

Week 4 The Surface of the Sea chapter 2 – second half

Week 5 The Changing Year chapter 3 – first half

A really great visual on warmer water rising and cold water sinking- which is how the ocean waters “stir up” the minerals for feeding.

Week 6 chapter 3 – second half

Week 7 chapter 4 1/3
A video of a world record for freediving, done in 2013. He reached a depth of 475 feet.

Week 8 chapter 4 2/3

Illustrated sea creatures, but gives a good idea of various sea life at different depths.

Week 9 chapter 4 3/3

A video of underwater sea life – no narration or names of the creatures given, but a large variety of underwater life is shown. Quite remarkable!

Week 10-12 chapter 5

Approached from an evolutionary perspective, but an interesting look at a rendered “drained” ocean for us to see the underwater canyons.

Week 13 Chapter 6

Week 14-16 chapter 7

Week 17-18, chapter 8

This was a fun read for us as we have visited the Mammoth Caves in KY and seen the caverns where they talk about a flood having once washed through. Of course, they don’t account for a biblical flood (neither does this book!) but it is so interesting how many places there are in the US that attribute the current natural state of something to a flood of great proportions. We have visited a few places and been amused to hear about a flood – Watkins Glen in NY is one such place, and if I am recalling correctly, The Natural Bridge in VA is another. Both places worth visiting!

Week 19-21 Chapter 9

The drained ocean floor from Hurricane Irma in 2017

(MANY thanks to Virginia, another AO mom, who has picked up my slack and continued beyond where I dropped the ball! The following are thanks to her and her kids efforts!)

Chapter 10 (week 22 – 25)
Videos are in sequence to the chapter content, but you might break up the reading differently.

* this is more about the overall ocean currents and planetary forces

* this covers the history of Ben Franklin creating the map of the Gulf Stream and a little bit about the ocean currents *

This talks about how using the ocean currents can save fuel. It was mentioned in the book, but this part of the chapter has more to do with the streams all over the earth and how they are just next to each other.

We have really enjoyed your videos but are wondering if you are going to continue as we haven’t seen any new ones in weeks. Thank you!

Hi Amy, unfortunately I never finished documenting them on here and since we are finished the year I likely won’t circle back to finish them. I’m so sorry! Life just got crazy and I dropped the ball on keeping this updated. If you (or anyone!) would like to submit videos for the rest of the chapters I would be happy to update with those!
